What is Eczema?
Eczema is a form of dermatitis. The term Eczema, is given to a range of persistent skin conditions. Eczema is a recurring, non-infectious, inflammatory skin condition and often presents as dry, red and itchy skin and can be characterized by one or more of these symptoms:
- Dry, red or patchy skin
- Flakiness or cracked skin
- Cracking and/or bleeding of the skin
- Skin Weeping or oozing watery fluid
The Eczema Association of Australia, states that eczema affects 1 in 3 Australians at some stage throughout their lives and is most commonly seen in children.
Types of Eczema
The two most common types of Eczema are:
Atopic eczema – the most common form of Eczema is an allergic disease commonly found in families with a history of eczema, asthma or hay fever. The skin becomes dry and itchy and is most common on the inside of elbows, behind the knees, neck, head and scalp and the buttocks.
It is caused by:
- Food such as cow’s milk, citrus, wheat, eggs, and peanuts, in particular for infants
- Food additives, preservatives & colourings
- House dust mites
- Washing powder
- Tobacco and other external factors.
Contact dermatitis results from direct contact with an allergen or irritant such as poison ivy or contact with chemicals. Contact eczema is curable providing the offending substance can be avoided and removed from your environment.
